Paul Lazarovich, a veteran communications professor at Wentworth Institute of Technology, has been honored with the prestigious Jeff Tellis Outstanding Advisor Award for 2017 for his work with students at the campus radio station, WIRE.
Lazarovich was recognized at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System’s annual convention in New York City, March 3-5. Event organizers and WIRE staff members said the national IBS award reflects Lazarovich’s dedication to the station and years of devotion to students in the communications arena at the Institute.
WIRE was recognized as the best online streaming college radio station (under 10,000 students) for 2017, according to Wentworth senior David Kreider, the station’s general manager. Kreider won for Best Staff Newsletter. The station also won for Best Live Broadcast Promotional Event and Best Staff Training Method.
The Wentworth station has racked up numerous awards over the years, including Best College Radio Station in Boston by Boston A-List in 2016 and, from IBS, Best Internet College Radio Station in the Country in its size category for 2014.
Lazarovich, a former Wentworth dean and Institute faculty member since 1986, has served as WIRE’s advisor since the station’s inception more than 10 years ago.
Using his experience in radio and television, public relations, advertising, news, and journalism, Lazarovich developed and has been teaching many of Wentworth’s communication courses, including Intro to Radio & Internet Broadcasting; News Writing & Editing; Public Relations Writing; Social Perspectives of Journalism; and Oral Communications.
Kreider called Lazarovich an inspiration to students at Wentworth, who have long benefitted from his communications expertise and dedication to the campus radio station.
Cranberry Country Journal caters to local listeners
Wicked Local Dec. 5, 2007Updated Dec. 6, 2007, 5:19 a.m. ET
Cranberry Country Journal is in its third month of providing topical and lively community-focused programming Saturday mornings, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on WVBF 1530 AM.
According to the show’s host and producer, Paul Lazarovich, “Each issue of the radio version of Cranberry Country Journal continues with our initial mission - and in the tradition of its long-running cable TV counterpart - to provide a ‘slice of life’ of the people, places and activities that make the Cranberry Country area a special place to call home.”
In keeping with that promise, the fast paced Cranberry Country Journal radio program has already brought area listeners an impressive list of guests and topics that include:
Talking baseball with Plymouth River Eels professional baseball team CEO Tom O’Brien; a Thanksgiving-themed program with Bridgewater turkey farmer Don Asack and Jennifer Monach of Plimouth Plantation; a special Halloween show with noted mentalist Rory Raven; interviews with Frank McDonald, executive director of the Old Colony YMCA, Principal Fred Morris of the Burkland Elementary School, Dottie Thayer from the Middleboro Historical Museum and noted local actress – and recently seen in the Matt Damon/Jack Nicholson flick “The Departed” – Peg Holzemer.
The program has also brought live music to the airwaves with in-studio performances by the Harper & the Minstrel and local musician Ray Moitoza.
The younger crowd also takes part in each week’s show. Cranberry Country Journal’s weekly “Word of the Week” segment has an area student call in with a word of his or her own choosing. The student then provides its definition and uses it in a sentence. Lazarovich said, “It’s a great way to get kids involved with the show. We’ve already had students from Carver, Middleboro and Taunton call in.”
Cranberry Country Journal has also enlightened and informed WVBF listeners with knowledgeable guests like Queen of Cuisine Christine Henning; as well as Joanne Byron, state chairperson of, “A Salute to Reading is FUNdamental,” local massage therapist Mary Barry, and memorabilia expert Mike Ventura of Collectable Corner.
The show also brought listeners stay-in-shape tips with YMCA Fitness Director Nate Goldrick; a conversation with Director of the Middleboro Public Library Danielle Bowker, and a program with suggestions and insights into college funding with representatives from Education Funding Solutions.
“And Cranberry Country Journal will continue to provide area non-profits and organizations involved in fundraising and events with an opportunity to get their message heard,” Lazarovich said. “We’ve already had on-air conversations with representatives from the New England Bluegrass Festival, the Taunton River Folk Festival, the Lakeville Music & Arts Festival, the Lakeville Area Mother’s Club and the Christmas Wishes program.”
An invitation is extended to neighbors from throughout the Cranberry Country area of Middleboro, Lakeville, Assonet, Berkley, Dighton, Rehoboth, Raynham, Taunton - and beyond - to join host Paul Lazarovich with “lively and topical programming that really matters” each and every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on WVBF 1530 AM.
